Lavender

Lavender is a magical cure for many ailmentsFor centuries, the lavender plant has been common in many homes due to its delightful shade and fragrant odor, yet the better part of lavender is its various other uses. The Egyptians used it in the embalming process and the Romans used it for bathing, cooking, and scenting the air. It’s also has great antibacterial properties.

I have compiled recipes from all over the world wide web and some from my own tried-and-true cleaning closet into one place. Read on to learn how to use lavender essential oil as a part of your arsenal for cleaning, laundry, pet care, health, and cooking.

Please note: I have not personally tried all of these. If you are not satisfied with the results, please discontinue use of the recipe or better yet, do some work of your own and try to improve upon it. Let me know the results!

Lavender Lemonade: 2 cups water, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup agave nectar (or honey), 3 Tbsp dried lavender, 2 cups freshly squeezed lemon juice, 4 cups water, 1 lemon, sliced (for garnish). Over medium heat, water and sugar, bringing to a boil until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and stir in agave nectar and dried lavender. Cover for about 15 minutes, allowing mixture to steep. Strain lavender, making sure to release all juices and syrup. In a large pitcher, combine freshly squeezed lemon juice, lavender mixture and water. Feel free to add a drop of blue coloring and a drop of red to mixture to give it a lovely purple color. Chill for at least 2 hours and serve over ice.

Lavender Jam: Hand full of organic, dried lavender blossoms, 1/4 c sugar, 2 tablespoons of honey, 2/3 cup red port wine, 1/2 cup creme de cassis, 1/2 water. Mix all ingredients in a saucepan and let cook for about 30 minutes until it gets all syrupy. then put in a resealable glass jar and keep in the fridge.

lavender scrollKitchen Counter Disinfectant: Add 1 cup water and 1/4 teaspoon lavender essential oil to a spray bottle. Add in 1/4 teaspoon tea tree oil for added muscle. Shake and use as needed.

Deep Cleaning Cutting Boards: Mix 20 drops of lavender essential oil with 1 cup water. Use to clean board thoroughly. Don’t forget the sides, where your hands touch.

Microwave Cleaning: Make a paste of 1/4 cup bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) with 1 teaspoon white vinegar. Add 5 drops lavender essential oil. Apply to interior of microwave. Leave on for 15 minutes, then wipe off.

Floor Fragrance: Add a few drops of lavender oil and some mild washing soap to the hot water. Mop as usual.

Great Air Freshener: In a spray bottle combine 8 drops lavender oil, 10 drops eucalyptus and 5 drop lemongrass  to 3 cups water. Spray away.

Cupboard Freshener: Add a few drops of lavender essential oil to a bucket of hot water and wipe your cupboards down, inside and out. Lavender has a strong insect-repelling effect, as well as the antibacterial properties.

lavender scrollBathroom Floor Cleaner: If you have hard floors in your bathroom, drop 2 teaspoons lavender essential oil into a half bucket of warm water and wipe floors down. The antibacterial properties will work great when it comes to the spread of nasty bathroom bacteria.

Tile Mold: Mix 3 parts bicarbonate of soda (baking soda), 1 part Castile soap, 5 drops lavender essential oil and enough water to make a paste. Apply the paste to the affected area(s) and scrub with an old toothbrush or other type of brush. Rinse well.

Soap Scum: Mix 1 tablespoon bicarbonate of soda (baking soda), 1 teaspoon salt, 2 drops lavender essential oil and just enough white vinegar to make a paste. Scrub the area and rinse well. Then leave a little vinegar on it overnight to remove any remaining residue.

Toilet Bowl Cleaning: Mix 3/4 cup bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) with 1/2 cup water. Add 1/2 teaspoon liquid Castile soap, 5 drops tea tree oil and 5 drops lavender oil in a spray bottle. Spray around the toilet bowl and seat. Wipe as usual.

Ring Around the Toilet Bowl: Mix 10 drops lavender oil with 1 cup borax and 1 cup white vinegar. Add in 5 drops tea tree oil to increase the antibiotic strength. Empty into toilet bowl and leave over night. Clean with toilet brush and flush away the next day.

Disinfectant Spray: In a spray bottle, mix 5 drops lavender oil with water and 5 drops eucalyptus oil. Finish filling the spray bottle with water. Shake well before use.

lavender scrollWood Polish: Grate 1 oz yellow beeswax and melt in a double boiler. Remove from heat. Before the beeswax hardens, add 1/2 cup turpentine* and 15 drops lavender essential oil. Store in a bowl or jar with a resealable lid. Apply in circular motion to your wood surfaces.
Caution:Do not add the turpentine while the wax is being heated, as it is flammable. Add it after you have removed the wax from the stove area.

Window Cleaner: In a spray bottle mix 1 1/4 cups distilled water with 2/3 cup white vinegar. Add in 5 drops each of lemon and lavender essential oils. Shake well. Spray onto glass and wipe clean with a clean cloth or newspaper.

Air Freshener #1: Fill a plastic spray bottle with 1 cup water. Add 6 drops lavender oil, 4 drops peppermint and 5 drops clary sage.

Air Freshener #2: Use to destress. Mix 1 cup distilled water, 4 drops lavender oil and 3 drops rose essential oil. Shake well and spray around room. Mmmmmmm.

Air Freshener #3: Great for sleeping. Mix 4 drops lavender essential oil and 3 drops chamomile essential oil with 1 cup distilled water. Spray around your room about half an hour before bed. Enjoy your calming and relaxing atmosphere.

Carpet Deodorizer: Mix 15 drops lavender, 10 drops clove and 15 drops orange with 1 cup bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) in a plastic freezer bag. Seal and let sit for 24 hours. Sprinkle on your carpet and hour before vacuuming.

Liven up your Vacuum Cleaner: Drop a few drops of lavender essential oil into your vacuum bag or filter. Vacuum as usual.

Freshen Curtains and Upholstery: Fill a spray bottle with water. Add 4-5 drops lavender essential oil and swirl around to mix. Spray over your curtains and furniture to freshen.

Scented Pine Cones: Soak pine cones in 2/3 cup water with 25 drops lavender essential oil overnight. Allow to dry. Keep away from open flames.

Mirrors: Put 1 cup white vinegar and 5 drops lavender oil into a spray bottle. Spray and wipe dry with a soft cloth or newspaper.

lavender scrollLaundry Soap: Boil 1 cup water in a pan, added a grated bar of Castile soap and stir until soap is completely dissolved. Allow the mixture to cool slightly, add 1/2 cup Borax and 10 drops of lavender essential oil and mix well. Do in a well ventilate area or wear a mask to avoid breathing in fumes.

Delicates: Mix together 4 tablespoons grated Castile soap, 8 tablespoons sodium lauryl sulphate and 1/4 teaspoon lavender essential oil. Dissolve 1 tablespoon of the powder in a sink of warm water and hand wash dedicates.

Fabric Softener Sheet: Put several drops of lavender essential oil on a clean, lint-free rag or washcloth and add to dryer at beginning of cycle.

Liquid Fabric Softener: Combine 6 cups Water, 1/2 Cup Baking Soda in a large container. Add 3 cups white vinegar and wait for the chemical reaction. Add 10-15 drops lavender essential oil. Use 1/2 cup per load.

Linen Closet: Store your sheets in a closet with lavender sachets on each shelf. The scent will penetrate the sheetslavender bushes over time.

Lavender Ironing Spray: Mix 4 drops lavender essential oil with 1/4 cup vodka (use the cheap stuff!) into a spray bottle. Add 3 3/4 water and shake. The vodka acts as the carrier in this situation. You can omit it, but you will have to shake harder to separate the oil from the water.

Lavender-Scented Drawer Liners: Use wrapping paper of choice. Cut to size. Mix 2 parts water to 1 part lavender essential oil. Dip a cotton ball in the mixture and dab onto the back of the paper. Allow to dry and install.

lavender scrollMouthwash: Boil enough distilled water to make several cups of mouthwash. Using a tea strainer, steep dried lavender for about 10 minutes. Remove and allow to cool. Transfer into a clean and sterile bottle or jar and chill in the fridge. User to rinse your mouth after brushing. Caution: Use in small amounts to check for sensitivity and if you are taking any prescription drugs, check with your doctor for possible interactions.

Steam Clean Your Face: Add a few drops of lavender oil to a bowl of hot water. Remove all traces of makeup and using a towel over your head, inhale the steam for about 15 minutes. Great antibacterial for your skin and a soothing way to wind down too.

Lavender Skin Toner: In a clean glass jar, cover fresh lavender flower heads with white wine vinegar. Store in a cold and dark place and shake the mixture daily. After a week, you can strain it and apply to skin by dipping a cotton ball in it. Caution: Test on a small area before applying to the entire face and neck areas.

Face Scrub: Grind 1/2 cup lavender flowers and mix with 1/2 cup ground unsalted almonds and 1 cup ground oatmeal. Apply the paste to your face and with warm water, using a circular motion. Leave on for five minutes and rinse off. Caution: Test on a small area before applying to the entire face and neck areas.

Acne Soother: Warm 1 teaspoon Honey and add 5 drops lavender oil, 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic, 1/2 teaspoon sugar and enough milk to produce a spreadable consistency. Apply and leave on for 10-15 minutes. Rinse well. Caution: Test on a small area before applying to the entire face and neck areas.

Skin Cleanser/Moisturizer: Blend 1 tablespoon aloe vera gel with 1/3 cup olive oil. Set aside. In the microwave, melt 1 tablespoon white beeswax for 30 seconds. Mix together the olive oil/aloe vera mix and the beeswax. Add 2 tablespoons rosewater and 2-3 drops lavender essential oil, stirring until the mixture reaches a creamy consistency. Pour into a jar and seal. Caution: Test on a small area before applying to the entire face and neck areas.

Hand Cream: Melt 4 tablespoons beeswax with 2 tablespoons shea butter. Then add 10 drops lavender essential oil and 8 tablespoons evening primrose oil. Mix until a smooth consistency and pour into a jar to set. Caution: Test on a small area before applying to large areas.

Lavender and Lemon Toner: Mix 2 drops lavender oil with 3 drops lemon oil and 3 teaspoons distilled water. Apply with a cotton ball. Caution: Test on a small area before applying to the entire face and neck areas.

Foot Soak: Fill a bucket with hot water, add 1/4 cup Epsom Salts, 1/4 cup rosemary leaves and 3 drops lavender essential oil.  Ahhhhhhhh

Cold Sore Treatment: Dab a cotton ball with lavender essential oil and apply to the cold sore. It may help shorten the duration.

Insect Repellent: Add a few drops of lavender oil to a teaspoon of carrier oil and apply to your skin. Caution: Lavender oil can increase photosensitivity if used in sunlight. Be sure to stay in shade if applying it.

Treating Eczema: Applying neat lavender oil to small patches of eczema can boost the healing process. Caution: Test on a small area before applying to large areas.

Detangling Spray: Pour cool distilled water into a pump-action spray bottle. Add 1 tablespoon aloe vera, 1 tablespoon glycerine and 8 drops lavender oil. Cap it and shake well. Spray onto hair.

lavender scrollHeadache Balm: Mix together 1/4 cup shea butter, 1 tablespoon grated beeswax, 1 tablespoon grapeseed, oil 1/4 teaspoon (or 1 capsule) vitamin E and a blend of 8 drops lavender essential oil, 1 drop jasmine essential oil, and 1 drop chamomile or lemon balm. Apply to your temples and the back of your neck. Caution: Test on a small area before applying to large areas.

Emergency Headache Cure: Put 3 drops lavender and/or 2 drops peppermint essential oils onto a folded tissue. Inhale three long, slow, deep breaths of the aroma. Pause then take three more deep breaths. Do this up to three times. Untense and Relax.

Lavender Bath: Add a few drops of lavender essential oil to your bath water and have a nice relaxing soak before bedtime.lavender dentist office

Catarrh Rub: Mix 1 drop each lavender, chamomile, eucalyptus and peppermint essential oils in 2 tablespoons of a base oil (sesame, almond or olive) and use as a chest rub for congestion.

Muscle Aches: Make an aromatherapy rub by mixing 2 drops lavender oil, 2 drops of geranium and 1 tablespoon of warm almond oil. Gently massage the affected area.

Muscle Spasms: Combine 2 drops lavender, chamomile, rosemary, thyme or ginger in 1 teaspoon carrier and massage into affected area.

Bee Sting Soother: Mix 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) with 1 tablespoon water. Add 1 drop of lavender oil and apply.

Psoriasis Aid: Mix lavender and evening primrose oil together and apply to skin patches. Caution: Do not apply to open wounds or broken skin.

Sunburn Soother: Add 5 drops each lavender and chamomile oils and 1 cup bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) to your bath water. Another version is to add 8 tablespoons cider vinegar and 8 drops lavender oil to the water.

lavender scrollInsect Repellent: Fill a bottle with lavender flowers and cover with white vinegar, seal and set aside for 2 weeks to infuse. Shake it every day. At the end of 2 weeks, strain the lavender from the liquid and pour into a spray bottle. Spray your skin when you’re going to be outside.

Deodorizer: In a spray bottle, mix 1/2 cup distilled water, 1/4 cup vodka (use the cheap lavender beesstuff!) and 8 drops of lavender oil. Shake.  Add 2 drops bergamot oil, 4 drops clove oil and 2 drops peppermint, shaking the mixture after each addition. Spray into the air and on fabrics.

All-Purpose Disinfectant: Combine 4 cups distilled water and 4 cups white vinegar with 5 tablespoons vodka in a glass bowl. Add 30 drops lavender essential oil, then pour into a bottle. Put in the fridge for 24 hours.
