Supporting Drug Free Meat

Antibiotics used in PigsHelp me help all of us.  We are all under the threat from antibiotic-resistant superbugs, making us vunerable to common, once treatable infections. A remarkable 80 percent of antibiotics sold in the U.S. are used by the meat and poultry industry so that factory farm animals can grow faster and survive crowded and unsanitary conditions.  Support meat without drugs http://www.meatwithoutdrugs.org/#watch. Lets unite and stop the abuse before it is too late. Tell your supermarkets and local farmers, “drug free meat for me!”   We can be the catalysts to turn the tide on this abuse. We can show our support for companies that don’t take our health for granted.

This is another must see quick video compliments of Chipotle:

chemical companies were as out of control as they really are. The reports are coming in and it isn’t pretty. We are killing our food supply. We are killing the right to a healthy future for our children. If we don’t step up to the plate and demand this atrocity stop, we will pay the price later. We must wake up now and get involved. Stop buying anything that contains ingredients that have been genetically modified. Buy organic. If you think organic is too expensive, I guarantee that you will spend much more later on when you are fighting the diseases and illness that you will experience as a result of eating GMO foods.

Pink Slime Making a Come Back in Our Schools

What is your child eating?

… pink slime is making a comeback. It seems to be that time of year again and pink slime is coming back into the news. Last year Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota were the three states that were buying the controversial USDA approved ground beef better known as pink slime for use in their school lunch programs. This year, Politico reports that as of September 3rd, 2013, two million pounds of this yuck has been purchased by seven states. Read their article: http://www.politico.com/story/2013/09/pink-slime-school-lunches-96502_Page2.html

I’m so disappointed. Why would districts in Illinois, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia, in addition to the three that were doing it last year, continue to put our children in further health danger by having them eat this disgusting meat-like substance? They say it cuts the cost of ground beef by approximately three percent, but is anyone asking the big questions like: What’s the cost to our children’s health? Are we being penny wise and pound foolish? I think we are.

Knowledge is Power Series – 71 Senators voted against your right to know if the food you are purchasing is genetically modified.

71 Senators voted against your right to know if the food you are purchasing is genetically modified.

If you believe you have the right to know whether or not the food you are purchasing is genetically modified, then you need to get these Senators out of office. They have voted against our right to know. The Organic Consumers Association has reported that 90% of consumers want to know if the food they are purchasing is genetically modified. So this means that 71 Senators voted against 90% of the people that voted them into office. I thought we voted them into office to protect us and act on our behalf? What gives? What happened to our Tenth Amendment right, the right of individual states to protect the health, safety and welfare of its citizens and local businesses? The bill they voted against was the 2013 Farm Bill that would have guaranteed states the right to enact mandatory GMO labeling laws. Specifically it is known as The Sanders Amendment (S.AMDT.965).

Why would these Senators do this? All we want is “to know” what kind of food we are eating. It is like labeling organic vs non-organic. We have the right to know how our food is being produced. It is that simple. Could it be that Monsanto donated almost $6 million dollars to the agriculture lobby? Could it be that almost $1 million dollars of that money went to political candidates that include some of these 71 Senators listed below? Hummm here we go again, the fox is guarding the hen house; the wolves are wearing sheep’s clothing!
Let’s step up to the plate people. We 90% have a right to know. The Sanders amendment is simple. We aren’t asking for much. Let’s not forget that Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), the chair of the Agriculture Committee, received $739,926 in campaign contributions from Big Agriculture in 2012. Let’s also remember that Bill Gates who is an advocate of GMO foods, is also a Monsanto shareholder. As stated in the recent Organic Consumer Association article, “there is plenty of evidence refuting the claim that GMO crops can solve world hunger, improve nutrition or survive drought. The focus on efficiency over health and safety, when we’re talking about our food, should be enough to set off alarm bells. Claiming efficiency, whether it’s a valid claim or not, as a reason to trample states’ rights to make their own decisions regarding food and agriculture, should have us thinking “slippery slope.”. We just want to know. We have that right and should not be snowed over by self-serving politicians and greedy, power hungry corporations.
These are the 71 Senators in alphabetical order, that voted against GMO labeling.

Alexander (R-TN), Ayotte (R-NH), Baldwin (D-WI), Barrasso (R-WY), Baucus (D-MT), Blunt (R-MO), Boozman (R-AR), Brown (D-OH), Burr (R-NC), Carper (D-DE), Casey (D-PA), Chambliss (R-GA), Coats (R-IN), Coburn (R-OK), Cochran (R-MS), Collins (R-ME), Coons (D-DE), Corker (R-TN), Cornyn (R-TX), Cowan (D-MA), Crapo (R-ID), Cruz (R-TX), Donnelly (D-IN), Durbin (D-IL), Enzi (R-WY), Fischer (R-NE), Franken (D-MN), Gillibrand (D-NY), Graham (R-SC), Grassley (R-IA), Hagan (D-NC), Harkin (D-IA), Hatch (R-UT), Heitkamp (D-ND), Heller (R-NV), Hoeven (R-ND), Inhofe (R-OK), Isakson (R-GA), Johanns (R-NE), Johnson (D-SD), Johnson (R-WI), Kaine (D-VA), Kirk (R-IL), Klobuchar (D-MN), Landrieu (D-LA), Lee (R-UT), Levin (D-MI), McCain (R-AZ), McCaskill (D-MO), McConnell (R-KY), Menendez (D-NJ), Moran (R-KS), Nelson (D-FL), Paul (R-KY), Portman (R-OH), Pryor (D-AR), Risch (R-ID), Roberts (R-KS), Rubio (R-FL), Scott (R-SC), Sessions (R-AL), Shaheen (D-NH), Shelby (R-AL), Stabenow (D-MI), Thune (R-SD), Toomey (R-PA), Udall (D-CO), Vitter (R-LA), Warner (D-VA), Warren (D-MA), Wicker (R-MS)

If GMO’d Foods Are So Good, Why Is Everyone Telling Us That It’s So Bad?

I was just reading an article written by Haley Willard published on “The Daily Meal” website regarding Connecticut and the passing of the bill that would require food manufacturers to label all products that contain GMO’s. If I could get the rest of my readers to join me, I think we would have a big impact on other states following suite to what Connecticut is trying to do. Finally, the first state to step up to the plate: now that is progress on the food front.

But that first step-up does come with strings attached before the real task is accomplished. Apparently Governor Dannel P. Malloy won’t sign the bill into law unless there are provisions that are met. I hope that other states will stop talking and start doing what is so important to assure the good and welfare of our food supply. If the Governor of Connecticut can get four other states to pass similar regulations and one of those four states is Rhode Island or Massachusetts and the other three are located in the Northeast with populations of 20 million or greater, then this will be the beginning of the downfall of GMO’s. Yes, it is just the beginning and it will be a slow and steady climb but if we can just start by knowing what we are eating and not eating it if it is GMO’d, we do stand a chance of turning this greed and power induced mess around.

I am a big supporter of the right to know what I am eating and how it was produced and who was behind the production of it. If there is a big corporation behind it, I don’t want it. We aren’t just talking processed foods either folks. There are crops out there, take corn for instance, that are nearly crushed beyond repair due to genetic modification. I’m not sure we will ever be able to eat corn again. I think we are right on the edge and I’m not sure we can recover but I am hopeful. Wheat is another crop that big business is toying with and has been for a while. It isn’t as bad as corn, but it could well be on its way.

Write to your Senators and Congress People. Let them know how you feel. When I send around a petition, make sure you take action and sign it. There are about 20 other states including Vermont, New York and Maine that are considering similar laws. Together, we can take a stand and make a difference. Support your local farmers. Buy fresh foods and stay away from processed. It really is the best thing we can all do to help the little guy and take the corporate giants to their knees. But we must act. Doing nothing is an option that we can no longer live with, literally.

The key to wellness is through education. Knowledge truly is power. Stay tuned for more in the upcoming weeks as I turn up the heat through the summer and give you lots to learn, digest and ponder.

Coach D signing off for now. Enjoy your day living in great health and wellness.
