Just Because It Is Organic Doesn’t Mean It Is Safe … Organic Carrageenan

Here is another plug for eating un-processed foods free of additives like the one I am about to talk about called carrageenan. Eating foods in their whole organic form instead of buying them packaged like the ready to eat meals and dishes so prevalent today, will always be what I advise. Want to eat some soup now that the colder months are heading our way? Make your own. Here is how easy it is …. buy some chicken, put it in a pot of boiling water and let it cook til it drops off the bone. Let it cool, remove the bones, add your favorite veggies and some organic sea salt and wa la – soup’s on. It really is that easy. You don’t need a ton of spices for fancy ingredients to make a pot of soup. I make a big pot and then put it into quart canning jars. I place the jars in the freezer with the lids on loosely. Once the soup is frozen, I secure the lids and call it a day. Now I have plenty of fresh organic soup ready to go.

You can do the same with beef or with most any meat for that matter. Feeling overwhelmed with little time to fuss? Get a crock pot. Toss in a chick and some veggies and some water, salt and pepper and in a few hours; you’ll have a meal in a pot, free of additives and other harmful ingredients.

Want some ice cream, go get an ice cream maker and make it yourself. Turn it into a family affair or a party. Enjoy the process of preparing foods that will not harm you. Want to know why I am talking about this now?

I’m now reading about another food additive called carrageenan AKA Chondrus Crispus AKA Irish moss, which is extracted from red seaweed. It has no nutritional value. It is being used as a thickener in cottage cheese, soy milk, ice cream, yogurt as well as other processed foods. What could be bad you ask? After all it is natural; it comes from a natural source, red seaweed. Well according to what I am reading, research has been done numerous times and the findings were not good. In fact, studies found that undegraded carrageenan, which is the type that is widely used in prepared foods, was associated with malignancies and other stomach issues. I’d like to mention that the difference between degraded and undegraded carrageenan is found in the molecular weight. Undegraded carrageenan has the higher weight.

A prominent researcher, Joanne K. Tobacman, M.D., has published 18 peer-reviewed studies over the years that specifically addressed the effects of carrageenan. She is convinced that it is harmful to humans. Her research shows that exposure to carrageenan causes inflammation and it didn’t matter if it was degraded or undegraded. Dr. Tobacman also noted that carrageenan was also used by drug investigators in the past. They knowingly used it to cause inflammation when they were doing testing on the anti-inflammatory properties of new drugs that they were trying to bring to market. It was actually proven in testing on lab mice. They found that when mice were exposed to low doses of carrageenan for 18 days, the mice developed a profound intolerance to glucose along with impaired insulin action which eventually leads to diabetes. Remember this was after 18 days of low dose exposure. Now that is scary especially when the incidents of diabetes is climbing astronomically especially among our children.

I have been reading more and more about inflammation these days. Could this be another additive substance that we need to be on the look out for? It is well known that chronic inflammation is a root cause for many illnesses including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, cancer and heart disease. I can tell you this, if anyone is experiencing stomach and/or digestive issues like inflammatory bowel disease, I would seriously start looking at your labels and if this substance is in it, stop eating it immediately. In my book, we have enough digestive issues to worry about with the consumption of genetically modified food. Now it seems that there is yet another that will be causing major havoc on our internal body functions.

Look, we already have enough substances that are added to our food supply that we need to be weary of. Do we need to have another one? Really? It is exhausting to try to keep up. Now you know why I don’t consume processed foods. Every time you turn around there is something else that we have to be on the lookout for. What people may not realize is just because it is a “natural” and even an “organic” substance, doesn’t mean it is good for us. Lead is a natural substance found in mineral deposits in the earth. So is arsenic. Need I say more?

When it comes to gum and breath mints, consider this fact the next time you reach to put them in your mouth. These items begin the digestive process with the release of stomach acids that aid in digestion even though there is nothing going into the stomach to digest. If you ever consume these items, make sure it is only done after a meal has been consumed and never on an empty stomach.

My Master Cleanse Update

I promised my followers that I would report daily on how my master cleanse was going.  I started yesterday and am now reporting after being on the cleanse for 24 plus hours.  I did the salt water drink to clear out my colon.  I put 2 teaspoons of salt into a quart of warm water and drank about 1/2 of it.  It is tough to get down but I have to tell you, it works like a charm.  I only use non-iodized sea salt as directed and had wonderful results.  It really did work in less than an hour.  Pretty amazing. 

I followed instructions by drinking about 10, eight-ounce glasses of lemonade mixture.  Not really hungry but I am craving the chewing response!  That is the hardest part to get past.  Not sitting down to a meal is, of course, all in the head if you aren’t hungry and I’m happy to report I am not hungry.  When I feel hunger coming on, I drink the lemonade and then I’m fine. 

This time around, I am making it fresh as I need it.   I am not premixing it as it will lose nutrients and I’m not going to take any supplements while doing this.  I want to see what happens to my energy and my foot cramps that pop up when I’m not getting enough magnesium.  I’ve been fighting that battle my entire life so this is big. 

That’s it for today.  I’ll check in tomorrow.  PS:  I lost one pound!
