I just got this article on Fake News & Lowering the Risk for Heart Disease from Dr. David Brownstein, a teaching doctor out of Michigan.  I follow Dr. Brownstein. He is a teaching doc that also has a medical practice.  He is an author and is always sharing what he learns.  Dr. Brownstein shares many of the same opinions and treatment plans similar to Dr. Edward W. Pearson of the New Medicine Foundation.  Dr. Pearson is the doctor that I Coach for.  Read on. Learn, then share this with other family and friends.  Together we can make a difference, educating others. Don’t fall prey to the abuse of modern medicine or companies that put profits ahead of humanity and planet earth.  Questions?  Contact me.  I can help you heal and thrive the NMF way.  Coach D, Donna Appel, New Medicine Foundation, Virtual Medicine care and coaching from the comfort of your home.  donna.appel@newmedicinefoundation.com   561-389-6958

heart health - oxidative stress to inflammation to illness and disease

The headline in the New York Times (NYT) this morning–8.28.2017– states, “Anti-Inflammatory Drug May Lower Risk of Heart Disease and Cancer.  Findings Represent Medical Milestone.”

I am getting tired of using the “Fake News” meme when describing medical articles in the NYTs.  But, this article is beyond ridiculous and I can think of no better way to describe it.  This is another example of fake news and why we are in the health care mess we are in.

My wife, Allison, showed me the NYT article this morning.  I glanced at the headline and said to her, “There is no way that way-too-expensive drug will lower the risk of heart disease or cancer because of its mechanism of action.”  I told her I was going to pull the original New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) article ( http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1707914?query=featured_home) and do the statistics on my own.

Here’s my analysis of this “medical milestone”.

This was a randomized, double-blind trial of  Canakinumab (brand name Ilaris), a drug that poisons interleukin-1β (IL1β).  IL1β is produced by the white blood cells and is involved in a variety of cellular processes including producing fever.  Fever is the body’s response to an infection.  The body increases its temperature in order to kill pathogens that have infected it.  IL1β is also associated with other cellular functions including cell proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis—programmed cell death.

Inflammation is a normal response of the body to injury, trauma, or infection.  Signs of inflammation—redness, warmth, pain, and swelling–are common. Inflammation is stimulated by the inflammatory cascade which includes molecules like IL1β.  IL1β and other inflammatory molecules are not bad actors,0 rather they are much-needed molecules used to help the body heal from an inflammatory insult.  In the case of a fever due to an infection, the elevated temperature is there to help the body kill the bacterium or virus and to also stimulate other immune system cells to come to the aid.  In the case of an ankle sprain, the swelling, redness and warmth around the ankle serves the purpose to recruit other immune system cells to the area to remove the injured tissue so that new tissue can take its place.  Without the inflammatory response, the body would never heal from an injury.

Why would you want to take a medication for the long-term
that inhibits the healing reactions of the body?

Although commonly used anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin, Motrin or Tylenol, can reduce fever and pain, there are many studies that the long-term use of anti-inflammatory medications actually slows the healing process and can lead to other serious problems.  IF there is an inflammatory problem in the body, the doctor should actively search for what is causing the inflammation in the first place and treat that.

There is no reason to doubt that anti-inflammatory medications like Ilaris would result in adverse effects. To disrupt a crucial part of the inflammatory cascade that is responsible for apoptosis would lead any thinking physician to believe that this would increase one’s risk for cancer the longer the medication is taken.

Let’s go back to the NEJM study.  The authors primary endpoint of the study was the difference between the treated group and the placebo group in the numbers of nonfatal heart attacks, nonfatal strokes, or cardiovascular deaths after 48 months.   In the placebo group, 16% suffered one of the primary endpoints.  For those that took the drug,[i] 14.2% suffered a primary endpoint.  My analysis found a 12% relative risk reduction for subjects who took Ilaris compared to those who took a placebo.

But, as I have stated many times before, the relative risk is a statistical tool used by The Big Pharma Cartel to make a poorly performing drug look better than it actually is.  In fact, relative risk reduction  should never be used when considering whether to use a drug or not.  The absolute risk difference between the two groups is 1.8% (16% – 14.2%).  I explain more about these statistical manipulations in my book, The Statin Disaster

That means Ilaris failed 98.8% (100%-1.8%) of those who took it.
That is a medical milestone?

Folks, that is the perfect example of “Fake News” at its best.

Not only did the drug fail most who took it, those who took Ilaris were found to have a higher incidence of fatal infection compared to those who took placebo.  That should easily be predicted knowing the mechanism of action of this drug.

As for the sub-headline about reducing the risk of cancer, this study was not designed for that purpose.  It was found to reduce the number of deaths from lung cancer.  However, that number was miniscule and there were too few patients who actually died of lung cancer to make any firm conclusion.

This drug costs approximately $200,000 per year.  Of course, the sponsor of the study, Norvartis produces Ilaris.  And, the lead author of the study has a conflict-of-interest with the C-reactive protein test that was used in the study.  As for the rest of the conflicts of interest, I lost interest as there were too many to report here.

Final Thoughts

I will now use these NEJM and NYT articles as a teaching tool for medical students.  I will teach the students how to identify fake news and how to properly dissect research articles in order to decide if a drug should be prescribed for a particular patient.  More information about the problems with drug therapies can be found in my book, “Drugs That Don’t Work and Natural Therapies That Do.”

Ilaris for preventing or treating heart disease?

Fugetaboutit.

Just Because It Is Organic Doesn’t Mean It Is Safe … Organic Carrageenan

Posted in Cancer, Cardio - Heart Health, Diabetes, Disease, Health, Inflamation, Knowledge is Power Series, Nutrition on 26.10.14

Share

Here is another plug for eating un-processed foods free of additives like the one I am about to talk about called carrageenan. Eating foods in their whole organic form instead of buying them packaged like the ready to eat meals and dishes so prevalent today, will always be what I advise. Want to eat some soup now that the colder months are heading our way? Make your own. Here is how easy it is …. buy some chicken, put it in a pot of boiling water and let it cook til it drops off the bone. Let it cool, remove the bones, add your favorite veggies and some organic sea salt and wa la – soup’s on. It really is that easy. You don’t need a ton of spices for fancy ingredients to make a pot of soup. I make a big pot and then put it into quart canning jars. I place the jars in the freezer with the lids on loosely. Once the soup is frozen, I secure the lids and call it a day. Now I have plenty of fresh organic soup ready to go.

You can do the same with beef or with most any meat for that matter. Feeling overwhelmed with little time to fuss? Get a crock pot. Toss in a chick and some veggies and some water, salt and pepper and in a few hours; you’ll have a meal in a pot, free of additives and other harmful ingredients.

Want some ice cream, go get an ice cream maker and make it yourself. Turn it into a family affair or a party. Enjoy the process of preparing foods that will not harm you. Want to know why I am talking about this now?

I’m now reading about another food additive called carrageenan AKA Chondrus Crispus AKA Irish moss, which is extracted from red seaweed. It has no nutritional value. It is being used as a thickener in cottage cheese, soy milk, ice cream, yogurt as well as other processed foods. What could be bad you ask? After all it is natural; it comes from a natural source, red seaweed. Well according to what I am reading, research has been done numerous times and the findings were not good. In fact, studies found that undegraded carrageenan, which is the type that is widely used in prepared foods, was associated with malignancies and other stomach issues. I’d like to mention that the difference between degraded and undegraded carrageenan is found in the molecular weight. Undegraded carrageenan has the higher weight.

A prominent researcher, Joanne K. Tobacman, M.D., has published 18 peer-reviewed studies over the years that specifically addressed the effects of carrageenan. She is convinced that it is harmful to humans. Her research shows that exposure to carrageenan causes inflammation and it didn’t matter if it was degraded or undegraded. Dr. Tobacman also noted that carrageenan was also used by drug investigators in the past. They knowingly used it to cause inflammation when they were doing testing on the anti-inflammatory properties of new drugs that they were trying to bring to market. It was actually proven in testing on lab mice. They found that when mice were exposed to low doses of carrageenan for 18 days, the mice developed a profound intolerance to glucose along with impaired insulin action which eventually leads to diabetes. Remember this was after 18 days of low dose exposure. Now that is scary especially when the incidents of diabetes is climbing astronomically especially among our children.

I have been reading more and more about inflammation these days. Could this be another additive substance that we need to be on the look out for? It is well known that chronic inflammation is a root cause for many illnesses including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, cancer and heart disease. I can tell you this, if anyone is experiencing stomach and/or digestive issues like inflammatory bowel disease, I would seriously start looking at your labels and if this substance is in it, stop eating it immediately. In my book, we have enough digestive issues to worry about with the consumption of genetically modified food. Now it seems that there is yet another that will be causing major havoc on our internal body functions.

Look, we already have enough substances that are added to our food supply that we need to be weary of. Do we need to have another one? Really? It is exhausting to try to keep up. Now you know why I don’t consume processed foods. Every time you turn around there is something else that we have to be on the lookout for. What people may not realize is just because it is a “natural” and even an “organic” substance, doesn’t mean it is good for us. Lead is a natural substance found in mineral deposits in the earth. So is arsenic. Need I say more?

The Doctor Is In Q & A – Cardiovascular – Preventing Heart Attacks

Posted in Cardio - Heart Health, Inflamation, The Doctor Is In, Vitamin B(s) on 21.08.14

Share

Q.   Dear Dr. Pearson,   I was recently told by a friend that I should be taking a good B Complex supplement. They said it has something to do with heart function but couldn’t elaborate beyond that. They also didn’t know a good brand to recommend. Could you please let me know the importance of B vitamins and maybe suggest a brand that is of good quality?
Thank you, D.S., Phoenix, AZ

a624015459f54f02A.  Dear D.S.      Do you know what you’re Homocysteine level is? If you don’t, you should. This silent heart (cardiovascular system) inflammatory marker can be a sign of a future heart attack or stroke waiting to happen. When you hear of people dropping dead of a heart attack with no other risk factors, normal cholesterol, normal blood pressure, and they are physically fit, often times it’s due to this common inflammatory condition that is very specific to the arteries throughout the body. Without adequate broad spectrum B vitamins the arteries become inflamed and ‘sticky’, which begins the process of plaque formation as the body tries to heal the wound. By simply replacing the B vitamins adequately, and sometimes correcting thyroid dysfunction as well, the body is able to heal the artery and prevent future plaques. Of course, Big Pharma won’t support homocysteine claims as they have no drug to sell, but this is a widely known and very important marker to be checked when you get your next blood test done. PureCell B Complex is a brand that I would recommend. Not all B supplements are the same. Many are made with inferior or even synthetic ingredients. I recommend and sell PureCell supplements because you can’t beat the strength and purity of this brand.
